LoveScience Behaviour Policy

1. Our commitment
At LoveScience, we want our clubs, workshops and activities to be exciting, welcoming and safe places for every child.
Practical science is about curiosity, exploration and having a go. We understand that children can become excited, frustrated, overwhelmed or dysregulated, and we aim to respond to behaviour calmly, fairly and appropriately.
At the same time, the safety of children, staff, franchisees and other participants must always come first.
This policy sets out our expectations for behaviour and the steps we may take when behaviour presents a safety concern or significantly affects the experience of others.
2. Expected behaviour
We ask children taking part in LoveScience activities to:
Listen to reasonable instructions from the LoveScience team
Treat staff, franchisees and other children with respect
Use equipment and materials safely and appropriately
Follow safety instructions
Avoid behaviour that could cause harm to themselves or others
Allow other children to participate and enjoy the activity
Take reasonable care of venues and equipment
We recognise that children have different needs and abilities, and expectations will be considered appropriately for the individual child.
3. Supporting positive behaviour
We will use positive and proportionate approaches to encourage appropriate behaviour.
Depending on the circumstances, this may include:
A reminder of the expected behaviour
Redirecting the child towards another activity
Giving clear and simple instructions
Allowing a short break from an activity
Offering additional support
Speaking with the parent or carer
Changing the way an activity is delivered where reasonably possible
We will take relevant additional needs into account when responding to behaviour. Behaviour associated with a child's SEND or other individual needs will not, in itself, be treated as deliberate misconduct.
However, additional needs do not remove the requirement to manage situations where there is a genuine risk to safety.
4. Unsafe behaviour
LoveScience activities involve practical equipment and materials. Some behaviour can therefore create a significant risk of injury or harm.
Examples may include:
Deliberately or repeatedly throwing equipment or materials
Hitting, kicking, biting or physically attacking another person
Deliberately damaging equipment
Repeatedly leaving a supervised area
Deliberately interfering with another child's experiment or equipment in a dangerous way
Refusing reasonable safety instructions where this creates a significant risk
Any other behaviour that creates a serious or ongoing risk to the child, staff member, franchisee or another participant
This is not an exhaustive list.
5. Ending participation in a session
LoveScience reserves the right to stop a child from participating in an activity or session immediately where their behaviour presents a significant risk to their own safety or the safety of others.
Where reasonably possible, we will first attempt to manage the situation using the approaches described above.
However, where there is an immediate or serious safety concern, we may end participation without following every stage of the behaviour process.
Where a child is removed from an activity, the parent, carer or responsible adult will be informed as soon as reasonably practicable.
A parent or carer may be asked to collect the child from a club or activity where it is not safe or appropriate for them to continue participating.
6. Persistent or serious behaviour concerns
Where behaviour concerns are persistent or serious, LoveScience may decide that a child is unable to attend future sessions.
This decision will be made by the relevant LoveScience franchisee or, where appropriate, LoveScience HQ.
Where possible, we will discuss the circumstances with the parent or carer and consider whether any reasonable adjustments or alternative arrangements could enable the child to participate safely.
However, LoveScience cannot guarantee that a child will be able to continue attending where their behaviour presents an unacceptable safety risk.
The safety and wellbeing of all children and staff must be taken into account.
7. Refunds
Where a child's participation is ended because of serious or unsafe behaviour, no refund will normally be provided for the session or remaining sessions that the child is unable to attend as a result.
This reflects the fact that LoveScience has reserved a place and resources for the child and that the decision to end participation is made because of a safety concern.
Where a child is prevented from attending future sessions, any refund or credit for unused sessions will be considered in accordance with the booking terms applicable to the relevant LoveScience business.
Nothing in this policy affects any statutory consumer rights that cannot legally be excluded or restricted.
8. Working with parents and carers
We ask parents and carers to provide relevant information about their child's needs when booking or before attending a session.
This may include information about:
SEND
Communication needs
Sensory needs
Behavioural needs
Medical conditions or relevant health information
Strategies that are known to help the child regulate or participate safely
Sharing this information allows us to plan appropriately and make reasonable adjustments where possible.
Parents and carers should also ensure that the contact details provided to LoveScience are current and that they can be contacted promptly if an issue arises.
9. Staff safety and respect
Our staff and franchisees have the right to work in an environment where they are treated with respect and are not subjected to violence, threats, abuse or intimidation.
Aggressive, threatening, abusive or discriminatory behaviour towards LoveScience staff, franchisees or volunteers will not be tolerated.
Where necessary, LoveScience may take appropriate action to protect staff and others, including ending a child's participation or asking a parent/carer to leave the premises.
10. Inclusion
This policy should be read alongside our Inclusion & SEND Policy.
LoveScience is committed to inclusive provision and recognises that children may communicate, regulate and behave in different ways.
We will seek to understand the reasons behind behaviour and make reasonable adjustments wherever possible.
However, inclusion does not mean that LoveScience must allow behaviour that creates a significant risk of harm to the child, other children, staff or franchisees.
11. Safeguarding
Where behaviour raises a safeguarding concern, the matter will be dealt with in accordance with LoveScience's safeguarding procedures.
The normal behaviour process will not prevent or delay appropriate safeguarding action.
12. Review
This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains appropriate for LoveScience, our franchise network and the children and families we work with.
